Hello World: Uptime, Migrations, and Home Automation
If you are reading this, it means the new blog on my website is officially working!
I added this blog to document my projects, share technical challenges, and write about what keeps me busy at work and at home.
For those who don't know me, I am Derek. I am a Senior Systems Engineer based in Tempe, Arizona, working at ASI Communications. My daily work revolves around the tech and alarm monitoring industry. In my job, uptime and data integrity are absolute requirements, not just buzzwords. I spend a lot of time managing custom alarm monitoring servers, running live database cutovers, and managing VMware and SAN private clouds. I also keep legacy apps running until it is time to migrate them.
Working in an environment where you always need a backup plan shapes how I look at technology. But my love for building systems does not stop when I clock out.
When I am not working in VMware or writing scripts, I am usually tinkering with home automation. I have a HomeSeer GPIO project that I plan to write about here soon. A lot of the skills I use to manage enterprise clouds translate perfectly into over-engineering my own house. When I am not doing that, I like to unwind with a good video game.
